Numeracy Activities

Literacy and Numeracy Week 2014

Read for Australia: Sunday Chutney, by Aaron Blabey (2008, Puffin)

These open-ended questions have been designed for Early Years and Primary Years students.  Please alter them to suit your class.

  • When playing hopscotch how many times would Sunday’s feet touch the ground if playing with one other person?
  • What size box do you think would be big enough for you to get into?
  • What shapes can you see in the picture of Sunday’s new school?
  • Sunday had a tea party with her imaginary friends.  How much cutlery and crockery would you need for a tea party with your family?
  • If mum cooked 15 crumpets for your family’s breakfast, how many would each person get?
  • If there were 44 legs in the protest march who could they have belonged to?
  • Make a timeline of your first day at school (if you don’t remember all of the details use your imagination).  Put a clock face with the time next to some of the important parts of the day.
  • What time do you think it was when Sunday played with the bear and the elephant?  Explain your reasoning and record the time in at least two different ways.
  • Design a repeating pattern to go on the material of one of Sunday’s school uniforms.
  • How tall do you think Sunday is?  How tall do you think her monster truck would be?
  • How far is it from your school to home?  How long does it take you to get there?
